About the name of the website, Bandung 1955:
The name of the site derives from the Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung, Indonesia in 1955. An effort to challenge the hegemony of the east-west conflict between the U.S. and Russia, the Afro-Asian Conference spoke to the reality of third world countries navigating global geopolitics in the wake of decolonization movements and the emergence of the Cold War. However, as noted in the essay on this site, “The illusion of Afro-Asian solidarity?: situating the 1955 Bandung Conference” the historic gathering was informed by geopolitics and asymmetrical power dynamics between its continental participants.
